It’s Okay to Be Cheesy
Creamy, gooey, savoury cheese. While this dairy staple tastes great on pizza, sandwiches and pasta, it also has a potential dental benefit. According to some research, eating cheese makes the mouth more alkaline, which in turn decreases the need for dental treatment.
Specifically, consuming cheese neutralises plaque. How? Cheese, of course, contains calcium that mixes with plaque and sticks to the teeth, protecting them from the acid that causes decay. Cheese also contains protein to help rebuild tooth enamel.
The following types of cheese have been shown to reduce cavities: aged Cheddar, Brie, Monterey Jack, Gouda and processed American cheese. Remember that cheese is high in cholesterol, fat and salt, so moderation is key. You only need to eat just a third of a slice per serving to enjoy the tooth-protective perks of cheese. Low-fat varieties of cheese also offer benefits.
Keep Your Teeth in Tip-Top Shape When You Travel
If you’re going on holiday or packing your bags for that much-needed trip, don’t take a vacation from maintaining healthy oral hygiene habits. One of the best ways you can keep your dental health on track before you head for the open road, rails or skies, is by visiting your dentist for a checkup.
Of course, you want to make sure you packed your toothbrush, toothpaste and dental floss. If you forgot your toothbrush, you could always use toothpaste on a clean washcloth or even finger until you can purchase a new brush at your destination. If you are visiting a country where the water supply is compromised, always use bottled water to protect against bacteria, which could ruin your trip. Drinking bottled water also can help to remove debris from your mouth.
It’s also a good idea to include a pack of sugarless gum which promotes saliva production and helps to wash away the bacteria that can cause cavities.
